gone to the lake! (& last chance to enter the giveaway!)

gone to the lake

Our friends invited us to stay at a cabin with them this weekend, so of course we said yes! It has been practically a year since we last left the city. Hard to believe! With all of the last minute packing I'm doing, I won't be able to catch you up on my daily squares until Sunday (unless maybe we can get cell reception). Check back then. Meanwhile, be sure to leave a comment here by Saturday to win some fabric!

camping trip

Junior, Gerty, and I went fishing and camping (well, cabining, really) last week at McGee Creek State Park near Atoka, Oklahoma. A couple of friends joined us, and it was really nice to get out of the city for a little while. We stayed in a neat little cabin by the lake for several nights. Here are some of a billion pictures I took. Gerty had so much fun! I'm so glad we had the opportunity to take her with us. The boys caught a few fish but threw them back. We brought plenty of food and had awesome breakfasts, carne asada, hamburgers, and of course, sandwiches instead.

Sunday the three of us took the hour or so trip south to Hugo, Oklahoma, which was practically in Texas. We stopped at Mt. Olivet Cemetery to see Showmen's Rest, a section dedicated to circus performers and workers. I had read about this place for the first time on one of my favorite websites ever, Roadside America, probably 10 years ago, and I knew if I ever found myself in that area of the state, I'd have to check it out. The site has since done a story on the cemetery (they call it "Showman's Rest" for some reason; it used to just be a user submitted tip!). We didn't go to Paris, but if we had, I wonder if we would have been able to find the Jesus Wearing Cowboy Boots.

More Showmen's Rest and camping pictures on Flickr if you just have to see them!

Buckles has a blog of circus history! Anna May is deceased, but the other two are not, I am pretty sure. This marker was amazing and almost holographic. How do they do that?

In another section of the cemetery, we spotted this sweet inscription:
