Pattern: SmoothFox's "Cute as a Button" square (also a convenient Ravelry download).
Since I'm making my squares 8.5" so I can make a bunch of afghans with all of the squares, I only made this to round 7. In fact, I repeated row 6 instead of the original row 7 to finish it off.
Interesting stitches in this square included a v-stitch (dc, ch1, dc into same spot) that could easily be substituted for the cluster of 3 stitches that is found in traditional granny squares. Crocheting into the picot stitches on the edge of the white center to shape the square was an interesting twist.
