Pattern: "Tricolor Square" from 200 Crochet Blocks by Jan Eaton

I love the way the clusters of treble crochet stitches interlock to create this block. If you haven't noticed, I'm kind of obsessed with using shiny and not shiny brands of yarn together as seen here. I know lots of people like to stick to one brand throughout a project, but I don't. I really like the juxtaposition of different textures as much as ones of color, and I love the variety of colors available when I don't just limit myself to one brand of worsted weight acrylic yarn. For this block, I used Loops & Threads Impeccable (in "grass"), which is kind of rough, especially compared to the super silky feeling Caron Simply Soft (in "sage" & "limelight"). Even though the Caron yarn is noticeably thinner, I don't have a problem mixing it with other kinds of yarn. I just kind of...stitch a little more loosely to make sure it blends well. And this block is going to need just one more round of single crochet to make it fit in with the others, which have been about 8.5" each.

I say all of this to encourage you to experiment with different yarns together because when I began to learn to crochet, I was a little afraid to. Everything I read told me that I had to buy tons of exactly the same yarn, but the truth is, you really don't have to.

Oh, hey, I made some more strawberry pincushions! I am experimenting with crocheted caps instead of felt ones. I love them!

Since 25 is such a nice round number--for mosaic purposes, anyway--here is my progress so far! Thanks for all of your nice comments on the blocks I've been making!

  1. I like your appreciation of textures as well as colors. Do you know what you will do with the completed squares? A blanket, perhaps?

  3. Those squares are very beautiful! I have started a blanket some months ago and your mosaic inspired me to come back to it!
