Pattern: "Granny Square 90" from 99 Granny Squares to Crochet from Leisure Arts.
This was probably the easiest square ever. If you can make a basic granny square, you can figure out how to make this. The stitches that create the cross stitch part are triple treble* crochet stitches (worked into the center between clusters) that were substituted for the chain stitches that would normally go between the two clusters at the corners in round three. I can just picture a "cross stitch" afghan made up of three round blocks in all one color with different colored Xes. I wonder if the color changes necessary to do that would be really obvious though.
*I had a hard time finding a link showing how to do this stitch, but it is really simple. You yarn over four times, insert your hook through the center and draw up a loop. Yarn over and draw through two loops 5 times.
