chrysanthemum square

crochet

Do you remember this square? Because I was prompted by a fellow Ravelry member I have written up a pattern for it. Please give it a try and let me know if you encounter any errors.

For a 7" square, use a size H crochet hook and worsted weight yarn. You can make it larger by adding rounds, of course!

Pattern:

sl st = slip stitch
ch = chain stitch
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
hdc cluster = *yo, insert hook in space, yo, draw yarn through space* 3 times in same space, yo, draw yarn through 7 lps on hook.
dc cluster = *yo, insert hook in space, yo, draw yarn through space, yo, draw yarn through 2 loops on hook* 4 times in same space, yo, draw yarn through 5 loops on hook.
picot = ch 3, sl st in third ch from hook.

* = items within asterisks are to be repeated the number of times stated.

Begin with a magic ring.

Round 1: Ch 1, *hdc cluster, ch 2, hdc cluster, ch 1* 4 times into ring, sl st into top of first cluster (result: 8 hdc clusters with alternating ch 2 & ch 1 spaces)

Round 2: Ch 1, *(hdc cluster, ch 2, hdc cluster, ch 1) in ch 2 space, (hdc cluster, ch 1) in next ch 1 space* 4 times, sl st into top of first cluster (result: 12 hdc clusters)

Round 3: Ch 1, *(hdc cluster, ch 2, hdc cluster, ch 1) in ch 2 space, (hdc cluster, ch 1) in next two ch 1 spaces* 4 times, sl st into top of first cluster (result: 16 hdc clusters)

Round 4: Ch 2, *(dc cluster, ch 2, dc cluster, ch 1) in ch 2 space, (dc cluster, ch 1) in next three ch 1 spaces* 4 times, sl st into top of first cluster (result: 20 dc clusters)

Round 5: Ch 2, *(dc cluster, ch 2, dc cluster, ch 1) in ch 2 space, (dc cluster, ch 1) in next four ch 1 spaces* 4 times, sl st into top of first cluster (result: 24 dc clusters)

**finish off color and join second color in any ch 2 corner space**

Round 6: Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc into ch 2 space; dc each of the next 12 stitches across. Continue around, working 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc into each corner and 12 dc across; join with sl st into the third beginning ch (result: 72 dc)

Round 7: Ch 1, sc in same stitch; sc in each stitch around, working *sc, ch 1, sc* into each corner ch 2 space (result: 80 sc)

**finish off color and join third color to the left of 3 dc corner by inserting hook as shown in photo below**

crochet crochet

Picot border: Sc between clusters, (ch 3, sl st in third ch from hook--picot made), *skip 2 dc and sc in between next cluster, picot* across until corner; at corner sc to the right of the 3 center dc, picot, sc to the left of the next 3 center dc; contine around in this manner and sl st to beginning sc to join (result: 28 picots alternating with sc)
