it's my birthday! & more photo pages

teardrop page

Hey! Today's my birthday! I hate it when it falls on a weekday, but what can you do? Since I was super busy with work related stuff last night in hopes of getting out on time today, I didn't get a chance to post a new granny square. Maybe these photo pages I made will suffice until next time (hopefully later tonight)!

I blogged about the first page I made a couple of weeks ago, and I've been on a roll since then. I still hesitate to call this "scrapbooking" because I guess I feel like there must be some kind of minimum criteria for that classification. I'm probably overthinking it! The page above is my favorite so far. I cut what felt like a billion little scraps of paper into teardrop shapes by hand and glued them down one by one. Aren't Gerty and Jim the cutest when they are on the couch together?

la costa

This one features a bunch of photos from our recent trip to La Costa, a Mexican seafood restaurant here in Oklahoma City. Our food was amazing! Junior had some kind of big fish, and I had tacos (not pictured because they were not as impressive-looking). This place is so cute and tiny. I wish I had gotten a picture of the dining area. It was just two rows of booths all the way down with a narrow walkway in between. It felt like a school bus. In a good way.

jim dreaming of hello kitty

Jim is in love with Hello Kitty. Above he is pictured dreaming about her.

scalloped page

The page above was more of an experiment than the others, and I wish I had put a couple more photos on it. It may not be finished. These pictures are from one of our favorite Mexican grocery stores. Weird, right? I just love how colorful it is there compared to the bland beige and dingy white of most grocery stores around here. (I'm looking at you, Homeland.)

page

This one has a bunch of random photos all taken in the living room. I'm not sure what I'm doing with that label-y sticker there. I feel like it is a brand new notebook, and I don't want to mess it up by writing anything other than exactly the perfect thing there.

dinosaurs & crochet

This is another random pictures one. Let's see, there are a couple of photos of the afghan I'm currently working on, my favorite necklace, the dinosaur vs. robot tattoo, and a pendant that I embroidered. You can kind of see my awesome flower nails in that last one. The little paper dinosaurs are from a Martha Stewart craft punch I just couldn't pass up. Most of them are made from scraps of the photos I had printed at Walgreens last week.

Tons of my pictures are square, and 4 x 6 photos are always on sale, so for most of my prints, I photoshopped pretty backgrounds and two 2.5" square pictures onto a 4 x 6 template for each one that I had printed. On the page below, you can see more photos that had been printed with patterned borders.

birrieria diaz

This photos above were all taken at Birrieria Dias, our new favorite Mexican place. They don't mess around when it comes to condiments. You get about 10 little bowls of stuff to add to your food, depending on what you order!

And last but not least, here are Gerty and Jim again!

something that isn't crochet!

scrapbook page - pets
From left to right (and bottom to top diagonally): Daisy, Gerty, Snickers, and Jim!

Because I'm crocheting every day for my granny-a-day project, I love when I can get a little break in my routine and make something different every once in a while. (Don't worry, I will be posting 3 squares later today!) I've never really "scrapbooked" before, but after helping a not-so-crafty friend at work make a sweet book for her special someone, I realized how much fun it would be to use up some of my pretty papers. So now I have a scrapbook page with no scrapbook to put it in. It turned out super cute if I do say so myself! Having pictures of my super cute pets all over the page doesn't hurt either. :)

To make this 8 x 8 page, I used small photos of my pets, scrapbook paper, paint chips (the little scalloped circles), and flowers from Kitschy Digitals Candy-Coated Garden: Icing Flowers kit. Oh, and scissors & glue.

scrapbook page scrapbook page

I sewed it all together with red and pink baker's twine. Sewing on paper is so easy and always looks great! After tacking the pieces in place with a glue stick, I just placed my paper over one of my foam blocking boards for crochet and used a thick needle with a sharp point to punch the holes prior to sewing. Easy!

128::365 multi colour flower square

128::365

Pattern: "Multi Colour Flower" by Fiona Kelly.

I love flower squares like this so much! This was a great pattern. If I hadn't read Melissa's blog before making it, though, I might not have realized it was written in UK terms until it was too late as it doesn't say until the end of the pattern. That's why crochet alongs are awesome! I stopped following the pattern after the middle yellow round and began adding "granny" rounds like I showed you how to here.

I am a day behind now for the squares we're making in May. I'll be finishing Saturday's square tonight though! I bought some yarn today to use for my May squares. It is "I Love This Yarn" from Hobby Lobby. Craftyminx uses this yarn beautifully in her granny-a-day project! I couldn't resist the sparkly blue one. I hope it looks okay with the solid colors. If not, I'm sure I can find something to make from it. The colors in the photo below to the right are white, peacock sparkle, banana, limelight, and orchid.

I'm so glad it is the weekend! I spent the day running errands and tonight I'm hanging out on the couch with Jim and Junior, watching The Wizard on Netflix. Yeah, the one with Fred Savage. Talk about product placement. But you know what? It works. This movie still makes me excited about the prospect of playing Super Mario 3. And all the sudden I want a Power Glove. Oh and for Friday the 13th, I got a new tattoo from my friend Mike at Stay True Tattoo!

gone to the lake! (& last chance to enter the giveaway!)

gone to the lake

Our friends invited us to stay at a cabin with them this weekend, so of course we said yes! It has been practically a year since we last left the city. Hard to believe! With all of the last minute packing I'm doing, I won't be able to catch you up on my daily squares until Sunday (unless maybe we can get cell reception). Check back then. Meanwhile, be sure to leave a comment here by Saturday to win some fabric!

stuff i love sunday #1

mosaic

I am going to begin featuring a couple of mosaics each Sunday. One will be photos I have taken that I haven't featured on my blog for various reasons and the other will be photos by other people from my Flickr favorites.

Since some of the photos in the mosaic of mine are private on Flickr, I'm not including the legend because lots of the links would be broken. As you can see, in the past week or two I have taken pictures of crochet (of course!), food, my pets, and Gerty's "playdates" with her friends. The cute little guy in the first picture is Koda, our friends' new puppy, and the Corgi on row two is Georgie, another friend's dog. See those giant granny squares on row 2? That's a secret long term project I'm slowly working on in between other stuff. The cookies are my favorite peanut butter cookies ever!

Now take a look at these lovey photos from my Flickr friends!

Pattern: Something I made up involving popcorn stitches.

Okay, I'm only two squares into the new series of 6" squares, but I had to pause today and instead crochet something out of the new yarn I received yesterday in my order from Knit Picks. So far, this Wool of the Andes is pretty cool. I'm not totally allergic to wool, but it does tend to irritate my skin if I work with it for very long. And there is no way I can wear wool. It feels like I'm wearing sandpaper.

So why did I buy this yarn? I find that wool makes awesome potholders, and I read that Wool of the Andes is a good yarn for felting. That is the fate of this square. I am going to throw it in the washer tomorrow to see what happens. I love felted potholders because it doesn't matter if you get them dirty because you can wash them again in hot water. I'll show you my results tomorrow hopefully!

This picture more acurately shows off "Marina," my favorite of the colors I ordered. It is the outer border color.

I spent all weekend putting together squares for the afghan. I think I'm done, but I am toying with the idea of making it bigger...

Jim and Gerty have been helping out.

Pattern: "Bicolour Square" from Mon Tricot Knitting Dictionary (Workbook 0D14)

Want to know a secret? I never make foundation rings to start crochet in the round, even when the pattern calls for it. I always use a "magic ring" instead. They are so much neater and, well, magical. If you've never tried it, you should! Jim thinks so, too.

Pattern: "Flower Trellis Square" by Amelia Beebe.

If you try this pattern, keep in mind that if you want a two-color flower like the one I made, you have to change colors after the initial round. The pattern does mention that once you start the granny rounds, you may want to switch to a larger hook. I think any slight weirdness in the shape will be fixed when it I join it to others. If I make it again, I'd probably do fewer chain stitches at the corners in the final rounds. I've never crocheted a flower with petals constructed with loops of chain stitches before. It turned out cute and fluffy.

Speaking of cute and fluffy, here's Jim in his usual spot.

Oh, I have some exciting news to share tomorrow. And hopefully a tiny tutorial!

Pattern: "That Button Square" by Amelia Beebe.

Do I really need to say how cute a square with a button in the center is? Stitches worked around the back of the post of previous stitches makes the texture of the outer ring of the button. Pretty neat.

gerty

Today was even colder than yesterday! Here is Gerty, dressed for warmth. :) It is times like these that I wish we had carpet. I can still feel the super cold floor through layers of socks and slippers!

Pattern: the octopus crochet motif I made up with the same grannifying technique used in Jackie's heart square from yesterday. Oh, and also the cute little heart is this one from Little Birdie Secrets.

Fun fact: I think octopi are neat & have an octopus tattoo.
